Boone County Public Safety Referendum

The Boone County Public Safety Referendum failed last night. That means the Boone County sheriffs office will not be getting a new public safety building any time soon. This is bad news for not only the sheriff's department, but also the Belvidere police department who currently share the same building. Boone county officials say they cannot afford a new public safety building without passing a new tax. Sheriff Duayne Wirth says he's disappointed, but he can understand why the referendum failed.

"I'm sure when they voted it was a difficult vote for them, but with the economy and the jobs and everything it's understandable. it still hurts."

The sheriff says they are going to go back to the drawing board and try to find a way to get this facility built.

The Sheriff and Belvidere Police need to implement a basic clean and organization program similar to that of manufacturing companies that are pressed for space, (e.g. 5S). During a tour of the building it was clear that organization and structure is fundamentally lacking. I would recomend consulting with a lean manufacturing expert for training.

The sheriff said that it must have been a difficult vote. It wasn't for me. Poor planning by government officials should not be paid for by the citizens. By the way, the new parking lot is sure pretty!
