Immigrant Rights Goup Starts Illinois Voter Project

The Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights plans to contact more than 140,000 immigrant voters by mail and door-to-door campaigns.

The goal is to get 50,000 to the polls on November 4th.

The coalition's efforts will target areas that have experienced growth in immigrant population. Those include Joliet and Waukegan.

A coalition spokeswoman says the effort is nonpartisan, but the project's message is immigration reform.

The project is called Illinois Immigrant Action and is part of a larger $1 million immigrant voter campaign.

The coalition says it has registered about 26,000 new immigrant voters this year.
