ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Candidates for the 17th Congressional District stop in the Stateline to talk business and how they will help Stateline companies grow and create jobs.
Republican Congressman Bobby Schilling visited Benson Stone Company Tuesday afternoon in Rockford. There he received an endorsement from the National Federation of Independent Business.
The group believes Schilling is the right candidate to help smaller companies thrive because he is experienced at running his own pizza shop.
"I sign the front and the back of the paycheck, not just the back so I understand every time the government comes in and takes another piece of my business through taxes it keeps me from expanding and hiring more people," Schilling said.
His democratic opponent Cheri Bustos argues schilling's record hasn't been supportive of small business.
"My opponent at every turn has voted for tax breaks for the ultra wealthy so when I look at small business I want to make sure we have a level playing field so that they can succeed that the tax benefits are there.. so they can succeed and grow their business so they can hire more workers," Bustos said.
Both candidates say if they win, they plan to open a constituent service office in Rockford.
