Q: What is one of the most interesting things you noticed today, for those of us who don't sit in on trials?
A: I'd say how old these murder cases are--some of them happened three years ago--another thing that's interesting is how different the juries are. In the Nathan Bell jury, for example, the whole jury is men except for a single female.
ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- It has been a busy week at the Winnebago County Courthouse: two murder cases and a big rape case are up in court.
First we start with Omarrian Jones, the man accused of brutally killing an elderly couple back in 2009. 65 potential jurors were vetted this morning. The victims, Rey and Leticia Cardino, were attacked inside their home. They were in their 70s.
Just down the hall trial was in full swing for Martavion Sanders who is accused of killing a man outside of Chivos Bar on Broadway in the fall of 2008. A witness testified this afternoon Sanders was kicked out of the bar before returning with a gun. He's accused of shooting 39-year-old Tyrone "T-Rock" Thompson and one of the bar's bouncers. Today the victim's brother testified about what he saw.
Today marked the first day of testimony in the trial of alleged serial rapist Nathan Bell. One nurse, who collected DNA evidence from one of the victims told the jury the victim was in so much pain she couldn't lay on her back and she had feces in her nose hairs. A detective also testified Bell was caught on surveillance video.
