Student Found with Gun at East High School; Placed on Lockdown

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A Stateline student is in custody tonight after bringing a gun to school.

Several of you tipped us off on Facebook that East High School was on a hard lockdown this morning.

Here's what happened: school leaders tell us a parent called and claimed a student was armed.

Police Officers were called in and the weapon was found without incident. The student is a minor so no name has been released at this time.

Rockford Police tell us the unnamed 16-year-old male is being charged with unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a firearm, and posseion of a stolen firearm.

Harlem High School was also placed on lockdown today because of a report of shots fired nearby; however, school officials tell us the reports were unfounded and it was done as a precaution.

I thought Rockford schools have metal detectors to walk through, or is it just Chicago schools that can afford that luxury?

east parent, I am also an East High parent. i don't know about Jefferson but at East there have only been 2 lockdowns at East this year. This one and the one a couple weeks ago that had NOTHING to do within the school. It was because of a shooting at the Mobile Station on Broadway, only done for the kids saftey. My student is a jr. and we have been very pleased with East high.

This little brat should never be aloud to enter ANY school again. Private or public. Parents should sustrain the cost of home schooling and pay for resources used to deal with this snot nosed brat. Kids do not even know what a fist fight is anymore. They are afraid to man it up so they go get a gun or knife. Kid is nothing but a punk.

Funny part about it is you don't even know the story. Plus you don't know the person. Quick to judge somebody by what you read on the news. Plus the gun wasn't met for a fight.

Duh -What you fail to realize is ...GUNS are illegal in school. It does not matter what the reasoning is. And yes the parents should suffer then more parents will actually care about what their kids are doing. I take full responsibility for my childrens actions.

As a kid, I had a few excuses to get a day off school but never anything as disruptive as this. Suspend the kid for 1 year and charge the parents for costs the event caused.

Given the way that part of town is failing, he probably needs the gun for self defense...

Do we need to guess what the "Usual Suspect" in this deal is? It shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
