Stolen Catalytic Converters

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Drivers beware: thefts of catalytic converters are on the rise. They are being sawed off cars and carried away.

So far this year 17 catalytic converters have been stolen. They are being sawed off cars between Kishwaukee and 11th Street and Sandyhollow to Harrison.

There haven't been as many stolen since Valentine’s Day. Police suspect the platinum converters are being taken to out-of-state scrap yards.

Out of state scrapyards? Sure, because it makes sense to spend more on gas then the return they'd get for the scrap. Also since it's a limited area, wouldn't it make sense they are being brought to a location near that same area?

I have heard of this happening in the past. The platinum is worth a lot of money. It has been going on for years. Someone must be really broke and doing this a lot. No one better touch my car!
