ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- In the Stateline 12,000 cases of domestic violence are reported to police each year and Tuesday tonight the community came together to Shine a Light on the issue.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Organizers hope this event will make victims more willing to come forward and report the crime. Also Monday night, it was announced the Rockford area received a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice to help stop domestic violence. The money will go towards hiring more court officials to help make domestic violence cases receive a speedy trial.
