Rockford SWAT Team Getting New Armor

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford's SWAT team is getting some new start-of-the-art duds.

At Monday’s city council meeting, alderman approved the purchase of new vests for the SWAT team. The 28 vests will cost $45,000. Having the latest technology for the team means they'll be better prepared to handle intense scenarios, like hostage situations and tactical entries.

“Every year its incumbent upon our commanders, our commanding officers to review and inventory their equipment and to keep current with what's available and what's out there,” says Deputy Chief Michael Booker. “Anything that we can do to keep our officers safe as they conduct their missions and go about doing a dangerous job, we want to provide that gear and equipment for them."

The new vests should be delivered by this summer.

Don't have the latest equipment and an officer is shot and killed = lawsuit by union. $45,000 = cheap investment against lawsuit.

At least they arn't getting armored vehicles----wait they already have at least one. Ok but they don't have fully automatic weapons----oh wait they have them too. This is just more militarization of local police departments by the federal government. The motto " to serve and protect" is being replaced by " to search and destroy " all over America by a government bent on federalizing all local police departments and turning them into the American version of the gestopo

I am really hoping that we don't ever need a SWAT team as large as that. If the police ever need 28 armed and protected officers in a single incident then they might need more than vests. Also, how often is the SWAT team used? I can find only one incident on Google. Sounds a lot like Barney Fife needing tear gas. I could be wrong.
