ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- This year’s Rockford robbery statistics might surprise you: 43 percent have ended with an arrest.

Tommy Rosser Jr., Devonte Hill, Jamel Johnson, and Kalo Benjamin: four men who are charged in four robberies. They hit the Burger King on Riverside, Pino's, Anna's Pizza, and then their last job. The four men were finally caught about a month after their spree started at the Dollar Tree on Riverside.

Rfd. Police Detective Marc Welsh said, "The Rockford Police Department has done a good job reacting to the incidents of the commercial robberies."

They were known for using long guns. Three men would go inside and one would wait in the getaway car; now they wait in jail. Through November of this year, local businesses reported being robbed 97 times. That's ten percent higher than last year, but there's a silver-lining: almost half the time the robber was caught.

Welsh said, "if you're gonna go out there and commit these crimes we're gonna put the information together and there's a good chance you're gonna be arrested."

Gas stations and restaurants were targeted most frequently this year. Police say the solve rate is much higher because they are using statistics to pinpoint patterns.

Welsh said, "Tabulating the information, the crime information on the patterns of the robberies and this has helped us apprehend the offenders."

One of every twelve robberies happened at a business this year.

Though November, the city received a total of 533 robbery reports including robberies at places other than businesses--that's twenty more than last year.

He 43 percent solve rate is much better than years past, but it’s just for businesses. For all robberies, police solve about one in every four and that's on par with the national average for cities the same size as Rockford.
