Tony Duran said, "When these criminals come in and start breaking into our stuff and stealing our things it makes us sick to our stomachs that we're being violated by somebody that doesn't care that is willing to steal from everybody that has worked so hard to get something and they just come along and take it."

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Police say burglary is up for the third month in a row this year in Rockford and people are fed up.

Now neighbors are helping police and taking things into their own hands.

Burglaries to cars and burglaries to homes just won't stop and because March was an unseasonably warm month, Rockford Police say they saw a major spike in crime.

That's one of the reasons Tony Duran started a new neighborhood watch group on Rockford's east side. After his car was broken into multiple times he decided to round up his neighbors and take action. The group's first meeting is tonight. Police say most burglaries are occurring during the day when people aren't home.

If your house has been burglarized police say it's four times more likely to get broken into again in the next six months and if you live by a house that has been burglarized it's more likely your house will be a target too.

What are police doing to stop these burglaries?

They are using social media to track down stolen goods and are going door to door to warn people to secure their properties: many of these break-ins could be avoided if people locked their windows and doors.
