BELOIT (WIFR) -- A Stateline teenager is arrested after he's accused of stealing a car in Rockford and driving it to Beloit. This is a story we first told you about Monday night where officers used On-Star to track the stolen car.

Marquayl Shields, 18, has been charged with operating a car without the owners consent, as well as, Resisting arrest and trespassing.

This past weekend officers allegedly found him hiding in the basement of a home in the 500 block of Highland Avenue in Beloit after On Star stopped the stolen car.

ROCK COUNTY (WIFR) -- Teamwork between first responders in two Wisconsin cities helps nab two suspected car thieves, a capture that may not have happened without a feature many of us have in our cars.

Rock County Communications workers along with Beloit Police officers worked with On Star back on May 28, 2014, to catch a stolen car within a few hours of the theft being reported. Workers at the communication center say they've had On Star call before for accidents but it’s rare to have them call about a stolen car. This one was a red Buick that had been taken out of Rockford and was located by OnStar’s GPS technology near Strong and Central Avenues in Beloit. On Star tracked the vehicle turn by turn until officers could see the car. Once it was in officers' sight, On Star remotely slowed it down to idle speed so officers could catch the two men inside.

"I didn’t know they could turn a car off or slow a car down or anything. It was my first time to experience that. Both the dispatcher and I thought these people are going to run as soon as they slow the vehicle down so we were both prepared for that," says 911 operator Jenna Winiarksi.

“Since it was a stolen vehicle, once it was stopped, we didn’t know what was going to happen next so we needed more back up units there," says dispatcher Katelyn Moe.

The two suspects did run, one hid in an empty house in the 500 block of Highland Avenue in Beloit. Both were caught.

Workers at the 911 center in Rock County say On Star plans to use the audio from that call to make a training video for first responders around the country.
