ROCKFORD (WIFR) – It’s been a deadly week in Rockford as five people have been killed in the last 6 days.
In just six days, the number of people murdered in Rockford has nearly doubled. We’re up to 11 this year, just three less than all of the murders last year, which has many people scared.
“I don’t understand why people can’t learn to get along”
Helen McCracken says she heard the gunshots and stayed by 17-year-old Daemoan Patterson as he fought for his life. He and 33-year-old Charles Groom died after being shot in the 600 block of Woodlawn Avenue. Three others have also been killed in the last week. The rash of murders has many on edge.
“Of course I’m scared. I’m concerned.”
However, the Rockford Police want to put our minds at ease.
“We’ve got the best detectives that are working on it and they’re working many hours to put these cases to rest. We’re developing a tremendous amount of leads, information, suspects, and people of interest,” said Police Chief Chet Epperson.
Officers are patrolling the neighborhoods where the shootings took place, but the Police department says it needs our help to prevent more senseless killings.
McCracken says she’s called police numerous times and hopes other do too.
“Don’t show no fear. Stand up for your neighbors, be there when they really need you.”
Two others were shot here last night as well. They are both okay. One was shot in the arm and leg and the other was grazed by a bullet.
Chief Epperson says none of the shootings are connected and detectives don’t believe any are gang related.
