ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- We have an inside look tonight at what the Rockford Police Department is doing to track crime.

They're using a fairly new program that actually helped the crime rate in New York City drop by 60-percent.

We were invited inside a special RPD meeting this morning where they discussed every single crime committed in the month of September. They've been doing this monthly since last summer. They go over who's still wanted, who's on the run, and names of repeat offenders. Officers also discuss problem housing complexes and hours spent on the street.

If certain crimes go up commanders have to answer to a room full of experts on "why" and what's being done to change it.

Rockford Police Chief Chet Epperson said, "We go district by district we start at 7 am and go to 10 o clock--talking everything from nuisance to chaos to prostitution to shots fired to felons to parolees to people on probation."

Winnebago County Sheriff's Deputies, members of the FBI, members of the ATF, and the Rockford Housing Authority were also there to take note of crime hotspots. The meetings will be open to the public starting next month.
