ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- It’s official. The Rockford Police Department will have new officers on the street the first week of January. We have more on where the officers will be stationed.

The department accepted a $2.5 million dollar grant from the department of justice. It will put new officers on the streets in high crime areas.

It will also prevent police from having to lay off officers.

Right now there are 246 police officers. Police Chief Chet Epperson says he would like that number to get up to 285. The money is free for the first three years, but the police department must pay the new hires 100-thousand dollars each starting in 2015.

The police chief says they are in the process of vetting applicants for the new openings now.

On January 2 or 3 third they will be officially hired.

In the comments, tell us where you think the new officers should be stationed.
