JANESVILLE (WIFR) -- A Janesville man allegedly murdered his girlfriend last week and hid her body under the stairs.
Michael Paul is accused of beating his girlfriend to death, and, according to court documents, he left a voicemail for a friend foreshadowing her murder.
About an hour before Lisa Shaefer's death, Michael Paul called a friend and left him a voicemail. He said "I can't take it anymore. I’m either going to end up in jail or she'll end up six feet under."
Her body wasn't found until three days later. Janesville police say this is the first domestic violence murder since 2009 and that might be because they now go door to door following up with victims within three days after they've been abused.
The same seven officers follow up on all domestic violence calls. That way they can keep track of just how bad the problem is, unfortunately police say they had never been called to the home where Lisa Schaefer was killed.
Nearly two-thirds of all murders in Janesville happen to domestic violence victims.
