Today from Noon-2pm Rockford Police Officers met with neighbors in the S. 6th St. and 15th Ave. neighborhood. Residents say their biggest concern is a lack of street lights, which they think encourages criminals to run wild.
Public Works Director Tim Hanson says ComEd is in the process of re-installing 60 street lights all over the city, in areas that were considered too dark. Many of those lights will go up near 7th St. in the Midtown neighborhood.
Alderman Doug Mark also confirmed that City Council is working on updating the street light policy. It will eventually include a provision allowing residents to petition for more lights.
Police say prostitution, burglary, robbery and shots fired have been real problems in the area.
The neighborhood association meets the third Thursday of each month in the basement of Salem Lutheran Church. Leaders say they need more neighborhood involvement in order to effect permanent change.
