STATELINE (WIFR) – More than 2 million people in Illinois use the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and all of those people will soon be getting less money under the program.

We spoke with some families who say they’re going to have a tough time coping with a loss of snap benefits.

Corey Jones grabs some groceries at the store but affording simple things like milk is more of a struggle. His food assistance under the Wisconsin program was cut last month and now it’s happening in Illinois. Temporary funding increases under SNAP expire this week which means less money for families.

“I’m a single parent of two and so it’s hard to feed two and maintain the bills so with this cut, it’s putting a damper on me,” Jones said.

A one-person household will see an $11 monthly reduction, a family of two will lose $20 a month, and a family of three will lose $29.

A family of four will see $36 less per month which could be one less grocery shopping trip or fewer meals.
Laura Salinas, a working mom of two and a student is worried about being able to feed her kids.

“I’m having to choose between if one bill is going to get paid or if everyone in the house is going to be eating,” said Salinas.

For those who don’t truly need LINK card benefits, some people think the cut may give them a push.

“It should be motivation to everybody to go get a job instead of depending on the state,” said Reagan Smith.

The cuts take effect Friday. As of April, more than 70,000 of the 300,000 people in Winnebago County received SNAP benefits.

The cuts are being made because extra money under the Federal Stimulus Program, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, had an expiration which is now and it wasn’t extended.
