WASHINGTON (WIFR) -- A U.S. Senator invites Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey to testify before a subcommittee focusing on the national effects of sequestration.
"We have, it's very important for this discussion, the 6th largest concentration of aerospace employment in the nation. It may come as a surprise, but there isn't an airplane flying in the sky, that doesn't connect somehow to the materials, the components, design or engineering work that happens in Rockford," Morrissey said.
Morrissey was asked to testify before a defense appropriations subcommittee chaired by Senator Dick Durbin. Of the seven witnesses, Morrissey was the only one from Illinois and the only governmental leader.
The mayor testified that the uncertainty caused by sequestration had a negative effect on job growth and that presents a clear threat to Rockford's prospects for recovery and prosperity.
