FREEPORT (WIFR) — The Highland Community College Wind Turbine Technician program will be hosting an information session from 5 to 7 p. m. on Thursday, August 1, in the Wind Turbine Technician Training Center. In addition to presentations from Highland instructors, former graduates will be on hand to answer questions about their experiences in the program and career opportunities after HCC.
Prospective students, or even current HCC students looking to choose a major, will have the opportunity to ask questions of HCC instructors and tour the training facility for a close-up demonstration of the industry-specific tools provided through a donation from Rockford-based Greenlee Textron, Inc and others.
“New students are welcome to apply, and currently, there is no waiting list to enter the program. Students can begin training for this emerging and exciting career option as soon as this fall,” said HCC Wind Turbine Technology Instructor David Vrtol. “As one of the initial programs to receive the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) Seal of Approval for an educational institution, those entering Highland’s program are exposed to cutting-edge curriculum not yet seen at other community colleges.”
The Highland Community College Wind Turbine Technician program has provided the field of wind energy with highly-trained wind turbine service technicians, or wind techs, since breaking ground on the 5,500 square-foot training facility in October of 2008. In anticipation of the emerging job trend and local wind farm projects, the associate of applied science degree program, the first of its kind in the State of Illinois, was developed for the 2008 fall semester in cooperation with Elgin-based EcoEnergy.
A three-year National Science Foundation grant, which concluded this July, as well as an ongoing grant from the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN), have also provided support for the training facility, including the installation of a small-scale turbine in 2011.
