Rockford Health Systems CEO Gary Kaatz is seeing different trends develop in this recession compared to other downturns. Usually doctor's visits drop in tough financial times because people watch their spending. But right now, visits are actually up. He says that makes it more difficult to figure out the economy's ultimate affect on local hospitals. But Kaatz says it could end up translating into a better experience for patients.
Hospital leaders say they're putting capital spending projects and hiring on hold for now.
