School District Holds Fundraiser for Local Family

POPLAR GROVE (WIFR) -- The North Boone School District is reaching out to the survivors involved in a fatal car crash.

The district held a fundraiser at its headquarters today in Poplar Grove. Residents brought in food and made cash donations to the Tellez family, who was involved in the fatal car accident that killed two Belvidere North students last week. Gonzallo Tellez remains in the hospital recovering from injuries leaving the family with no income while he heals.

"People always wonder what it is that we can do. This is something small, but hopefully it will have an impact. Just to do something positive for the family and let them know they're supported and cared about as far as the community goes is huge”, says Transportation Director Ed Mulholland.
The district is still taking donations at North Boone Elementary School and the district headquarters.

This is a sad situation all the way around but having or not having a license didn't cause this. Blaming a plastic card isn't changing anything. If he had a license, this still could've happened, then what ? I don't know either family & think it's very tragic that this happened but get off the blame train. I do have teenagers though & I cried for these 2 girls just like many of you that didn't know them. Be thankful for the strong, caring communities that are willing to help strangers in need. I would think differently if he was drinking and was the one that crossed into the center line. He was wrong but that didn't cause the accident. I was on the same road that night & it was a sheet of ice.

this guy kills 2 young ladies while driving illegally, and a taxpayer funded school district is having a charity drive for his family? This is way out of line and this guy should be put in prison for manslaughter 2 counts. And why is it that he is the only moneymaker of the family? maybe his citizenship needs to be checked

This man should never have been driving. These 2 young girls should have been using there seat belts. If this guy wasn't driving, one could argue that the cheerleaders car would have swerved into the other lane and went into a ditch. I am saying if this guy wasn't driving illegally, those girls might be alive.

And i'm saying that maybe if these girls had their belts on they would be alive. Who knows? Nobody can speculate, it was in God's hands.

Though this is sad I do not agree with school district(taxpayer) resources being used in this manner.

I do feel bad for his children because this is so sad but it upsets me that this father was breaking the law by even being out behind a wheel when he don't even have a valid drivers DL, it was in the rockford paper Thursday he was cited for no valid DL I'm glad he is ok but he was breaking the law and I'm sure since he don't have a DL. He probably dont have insurance either, my heart goes out to his kids and I will donate but only because I feel bad for his kids
