Rockford Neighborhood Gets National Recognition

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- A west-side neighborhood that has been plagued with crime could receive thousands of dollars in improvements.

Twenty-nine locations in Winnebago County can now say they're on the national register of historic places...A list that's now adding a 30th local member.

You can find a lot of history at the Burpee and Discovery Center museums in downtown Rockford, but the national register of historic places says the neighborhood just west of the two buildings has a history worth preserving.

The Garrison-Coronado-Haskell historic district has made the National Register of Historic Places ...The agency says the architecture and condition of the district's homes made it a great choice for the list. The honor also brings extra help to repair buildings in the preserved area, making them eligible for tax credits to make renovations. A benefit that local neighborhood groups hope will brighten the districts future.

Larry Mills, Coronado-Haskell Neighborhood Association president says, "Now that older families have moved out, younger familes are moving in they have the desire to improve and upgrade the neighborhood and this offers them another tool in improving their properties."

The Garrison-Coronado-Haskell District is the 7th neighborhood in Rockford to make the list.

Order to make the National Register, locations must be 50 years or older. Other local places on the list include the Tinker Swiss Cottage and Coronado Theater.
