Freeport School District Rolls Out Elementary School Improvement Plan

FREEPORT (WIFR) -- The Freeport School District is ready to roll out a new $60,000 improvement plan to help students achieve higher test scores at one of its elementary schools.

Extra tutoring and new parent-student events are making their way to Taylor Park Elementary School as a part of the new improvement plan. The test score average at the grade school has failed to reach Illinois yearly progress targets for the past two years, although the 4th grade class did achieve passing marks in 2011.

The plan was thought to initially cost $500,000, but board members were able to find ways to cut it down to the final total of $60,000. Taylor Park principal Cathy Arnold says she's confident students will achieve success under the new plan.

"We are very aware that student achievement doesn't begin at third or fourth grade. Student achievement is very important starting at preschool. So we're working very hard as a building to improve what we're doing and how we're doing it at the lower levels, so our children will be better prepared at the third and fourth grade levels”, says Arnold.

The district rolled out a similar plan at Center Elementary School two years ago, which just received an Illinois Academic Improvement award for their recent progress. Superintendent Dr. Peter Flynn hopes the same achievements are reached at Taylor Park.

you cannot force people that either do not want, or do not have the ability to learn ! the freeport school board continues to throw tax payor dollars away on their inept policies, under the guidence of peter flynn. who in a short time will ride off on his golden retirement. thus leaving the freeport tax payor to foot the bill.
