ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Rockford is getting in on ComEd’s 10-year, $2.6 billion Electrical Grid Modernization Project in a big way, setting the stage for thousands of jobs making their way to Northern Illinois.

A state-of-the-art training facility for ComEd employees is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2012. The center will teach workers how to install power lines and poles through classroom and hands on training sessions.

IBEW Local 365 business manager Darrin Golden says ComEd’s addition will be built at the company's 123 Energy Ave location on Rockford’s south side, and will create between 50 and 100 jobs during construction.

The facility will teach workers 25 to 75 from the region at a time. Aside from job growth, golden knows it will also have an impact on Rockford’s economy.

"Every time someone comes in here to receive training, they've got to sleep here in a hotel somewhere, they have to eat and spend their money here, they've got to be entertained while they're here too. So I think it will have a very good economic impact for the Rockford area”, says Golden.

More than 2,000 jobs are expected to be created through the project. You may remember another piece of ComEd’s multi-billion dollar investment, the "smart grid" technology, built to limit power outages and have more accurate meter readings. Rockford’s training facility will help teach workers about the smart grid once it is utilized in a few years.

Kuei how will the cops run ComEd out of town? I think like most projections it won't generate the number of jobs it says but don't see cops running business out of town

@ kuei: Unfortunately you're still here. Why don't you look at this as the positive that it is, jobs for construction, advanced training and income that will be brought to the area. "Rockford PD will run this business out of town"? What the hell are you talking about? This is a GOOD thing, accept it as just that. Don't worry, there will still be enough bad going on for you to concentrate and devote your time.

Don't get excited. The Rockford PD will run this business out of town like they do EVERYTHING else. Just look at the disgraceful condition of Rockford. The politicians and cops have run everyone out of town.
