Belvidere Bucs Cheerleaders Step In for Support at Belvidere North Game

MARENGO (WIFR) -- Over the past five years, blue and scarlet colors have stood on Belvidere North sidelines. However, on Monday night there were cheerleading uniforms of a different shade rooting for the Blue Thunder in their sectional game against Freeport.

In a sign of unity, the Belvidere Bucs cheer team stepped in to root for Belvidere North, who lost two cheermates in a car crash Friday night, 16-year-olds Brenda Gutierrez and Thalia Arredondo.

"We knew there was a chance they weren't going to be able to do it. If they couldn't do it, we said we were willing to cheer for our rival school no matter who it may be they would be there for us and we would be there for them”, says Belvidere Bucs cheerleader Raquelle Sample.

The team donned shirts that read ‘two teams...one town’, a message Bucs cheer coach Sandy Cordray says will show the Stateline that the cheerleading community has no boundaries.

"You know these kids, we work with them day and night throughout our entire season throughout almost all of the fall and winter. They're like our own kids. It is a family...cheer is a family."

As the Bucs family cheered for the Blue Thunder for the first time, cheerleaders say one game or one hundred games, they'll stand in support of the blue and scarlet

"This is something that they would want no matter what. No matter if we're rivals or from all the way across the state. We would do anything for them”, says Sample.
