111-year-old man dies in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) -- One of the oldest men in the world has died in Rock Island.

The Quad City Times reports (http://bit.ly/OUw2Vc) 111-year-old Shelby Harris died Wednesday at the Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Dr. L. Stephen Coles is with the Gerontology Research Group and Supercentenarian Research Foundation in Los Angeles. He says Harris was the third-oldest man in the world when he died and the oldest man in the U.S.

Nursing home officials in western Illinois say Harris died in his sleep of natural causes and that he had recently experienced a decline in health.

Harris celebrated his 111th birthday in March. In April he threw out the first pitch at a Quad-Cities River Bandits baseball game.

Harris was a deacon at a Rock Island church until he was 102.
