West Nile Shows Up in Stateline

STATELINE (WIFR) -- Health officials say they have confirmed this years first batch of mosquito's testing positive for the West Nile Virus in the Stateline. The Boone County Health Department confirmed one batch of mosquitos in the Poplar Grove area did test positive for West Nile. So far, there have been no reports of people getting the virus.

"We now know it is here. We varrified its pressence in boone county. From there, we want everyone to be aware of that so that the general public acts appropriatley and knows what to do," Boone County Health Department Director of Health Bill Hatfield said.

You can do your share by continuing to practice the three R's. That means reduce your chances of being bit by staying indoors around dusk and dawn. Repel mosquitos by wearing clothing that eliminates exposed skin and also a bug spray containing deet. The third thing you can do is report dead birds, as they are a major carrier of the disease. Boone county has four testing sites that they monitor each week.

The west nile carrying culex mosquitos aren't the only thing area health departments are monitoring for....there is a new mosquito working its way into the stateline. The asian tiger mosquito which is several times bigger and feeds all day long. First brought to the united states in nineteen-eighty-five from foreign imports. The mosquito is now in more then 20 states, including illinois, and as far north as Minnesota

Along with carrying West Nile, the tiger mosquito can also carry forms of encephalitis. Something area health departments want us to be aware of as we spend time outside this summer.

The hot and humid weather this week are prime conditions for mosquito breeding. If you have any standing water on your property, it's important to empty it out.
