ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- SwedishAmerican Center for Mental Health nurses recently presented at the 2014 Nurses Expo on March 27 and 28 at Giovanni’s Restaurant & Conference Center. Amy Kirsch, MSN, RN, director of psychiatric services; Barbara Connors, BSN, MS, RN; and Eve Dano, BSN, BS, RN, gave a poster presentation titled: “Soothing Rooms, Reducing Restraint Trauma in Patients and Nurses.”
The Center for Mental Health implemented soothing rooms in December 2012 as the initial means of redirecting distraught patients as its standard, evidence-based practice. The practice has shown positive results with a 35 percent decrease in restraint usage and remarkable results among the adult inpatient population.
Soothing rooms in the adolescent and adult units are designed to provide a calming environment with features such as art therapy tools, stress balls, chalkboards, games and puzzles, music, DVDs with nature scenes and a sandbox for tactile relaxation.
The 2014 Nurses Expo was sponsored and presented by the Stateline Nurses Network NFP. It provided an environment to share information and foster development of professional relationships for past, present and future nurses from hospital, home, occupational, community, private practice and clinical settings.
