President Bush Signs Great Lakes Water Compact

Updated: 10/03/2008 - President Bush has signed a compact designed to prevent Great Lakes water from being sent to thirsty areas while requiring the region's eight states to regulate their own water use. The Council of Great Lakes Governors announced that Bush had signed the pact Friday. It's the final step in a process going back nearly a decade, when the region's governors began discussing how to prevent other regions from tapping into the lakes. The deal was negotiated by the governors and ratified by legislatures in all eight states. Congress recently gave its approval. The compact bans new diversions of water with limited exceptions for communities near the basin boundary. It sets a standard for Great Lakes states to use in regulating water use.
