ROCK COUNTY (WIFR) -- Men from around Rock County will be sliding into high heels to Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Friday, September 27.
This year's roster of chairmen includes Chad Sullivan, Dr. Matt Richardson, Larry Barton, Jon and Ethan Wangerin, Matt Krueger, Caleb Gates, Steve Vicenzi, John Ludwig, Mollie Myers, Brian Cherry, Nick and Logan Barritt, Jack Hoag, Jason Dobes and Joe Jimenez.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes starts at Janesville's Pontiac Convention Center. Participants will walk one mile for pledges and donations. The march is followed by a dinner reception. "My sister never saw herself as a domestic violence victim," says Sharon Bucklin, event keynote speaker. "A lot of people think you need to have a repetitive history in order for it to be considered domestic violence. Many women should seek help sooner."
Bucklin's sister, Susan Anderson, was killed by her husband in Janesville in 1995.
Proceeds from Walk a Mile in Her Shoes directly benefit YWCA Rock County's Alternatives to Violence program, which includes the agency's 33-bed domestic violence shelter. In 2012, 139 women and 143 children found refuge in the YWCA's domestic violence shelter. Staff and volunteers fielded 339 calls on the 24-hour crisis HELPline. Proceeds also benefit YWCA Rock County's Transitions for Women program, which helps single mothers with a history of domestic violence find sustainable employment and affordable housing for their families. Transitions for Women served 60 households in 2012. About Walk a Mile
