Winnebago Sheriff Candidates Talk About Prison System

ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Candidates for Winnebago County Sheriff spent the day at the Prison Ministry workshop at Christ United Methodist Church.

All seven contenders listened to how Rockford Reach Out Jail Ministry's program can be improved and then, one-by-one, answered questions relating to the prison system.

Rockford Reach Out's executive director says they're hoping the next sheriff can make an effort to keep ex-convicts from going back behind bars.

"We really want to work with these men and women to give them the tools necessary so they don't turn back to crime so they can turn to something more positive," said George Hofstetter of Rockford Reach Out. "We hope to give them the tools that they need to prepare and equip them for a successful life outside."

The candidates will be speaking again Sunday afternoon back inside Christ United Methodist Church for another sheriff forum.
