ROCKFORD (WIFR) – After several months of delay, the new driver’s license facility on Rockford’s west side is now open. It replaces the one abruptly closed last summer.
Arnold Walker is relieved he doesn’t have to keep putting off getting his license plate sticker renewed. The new driver’s license facility at Auburn near Kilburn is right near his home.
“Oh it’s convenient like for me it’s maybe a mile away, so it’s real convenient. I think as you get older, you hate to drive way across town for everything,” said Walker.
The state abruptly closed the old location which was just a few blocks west due to maintenance problems. Which meant anyone who needed service on the west side had to either go to the facility on East State or Baxter Road which is 15 miles away.
“We had no intentions of opening a new facility, there was an outcry for it and I commit myself to helping to make that become a reality,” said Secretary of State Jesse White.
The Secretary of State says rent on the new facility is about $10,000 less than what it was at the old site.
“It’s a big asset to us to have this here and it shows that the state and the city is willing to support the west side and us residents, said James DeVoe, a west side resident.
Residents who need a physical drivers’ test will still need to use other facilities, because the one on Auburn is only an express facility.
The facility was originally slated to open at the beginning of the year, but was delayed due to setbacks in construction.
