ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- After closing the West side driver's license facility in July, the Secretary of State has responded to the resistance that came with that decision. A new location will be opening on the West side. Jesse White and Rockford City leaders announced today that the new express facility will be located inside the old Gray's IGA on Auburn Street.
The space needs some work before it opens in January. White says his office put ads in the paper to find a new building before the old facility closed, but there were no takers.
"The committee that was involved in selecting facilities and maintaining facilities, they are the ones who had that under their jurisdiction and finally after things fell apart and came to me, I was not a happy camper,” said Secretary of State, Jesse White.
We're told at the new facility, you'll be able to do almost everything you can do at the East State Street branch, including renewing your driver's license and registering to vote. However, you will not be able to take any driving tests.
