Volunteers Continue Beyer Stadium Restoration

Rockford volunteers hope to revitalize a longtime community staple, in order to bring the Forest City some international attention.

Rain or shine, volunteers have been renovating Beyer stadium located on 15th avenue. Now they're replacing the entire sidewalk surrounding the park. This stadium was once home of the Rockford Peaches, in the1940s.

'Friends of Beyer' have been restoring the field since it was demolished more than 10 years ago. The organization added a new diamond and scoreboard. Workers say they want to showcase Rockford’s rich sports history with a new and improved landmark.

"We're trying to bring the park back up to specification, in regards to the facility that it can be used by Rockford and the surrounding community, as well as be a tourist area that people from out of town would like to come and see where the peaches played,” said Steve MacIntosh, volunteer with ‘Friends of Beyer.’

The stadium should be finished by Labor Day, for an International Women's Baseball Tournament, where nearly twenty teams from places like Australia and Canada will play.
