ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Some new statistics on unemployment show that Rockford is number one in the state and this time it's for a good thing: the number of people applying for unemployment has reached a five year low.
These numbers show that the economy has started to stabilize in our area--fewer people are getting fired or laid off.
In 2011, just over 27 thousand people in Boone and Winnebago counties filed for unemployment for the first time. That number is 37 percent smaller than it was in 2010. Such a sharp decrease in new claims has economists cautiously optimistic that things are starting to stabilize.
It could even start to improve more drastically as Chrysler and its local suppliers start hiring and more money makes its way into the local economy.
It's important to realize that this data is a snap-shot back in time and only reflects the overall trend for 2011. It is possible that more people could file claims in 2012.
