ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- After announcing that they would be hiring up to 600 seasonal workers, UPS has just begun delivering on that promise.
"I can't do fast food, I can't do telemarketing. It's either work hard or don't work at all for me." After filling out 17 job applications in just one day, Kelly Poole finally got the call she'd been waiting for.
"Got a call like around 11:30 saying, hey you want to come in for an interview today? I was so excited," said Poole. While some people want the seasonal UPS job for extra spending money, Poole says she needs this job just to make ends meet.
"Maybe I’ll be able to pay my bills this month and next month and the month after that." UPS started hiring seasonal workers at the Rockford Air Hub at the beginning of October.
At $8.50 an hour, people like Poole will have to handle a heavy load. “It'll be easy for me, I can do it that's for sure." Nick Ciaccio is no stranger to UPS. This would be his second time as a seasonal employee. "I know it's a great company to work for and I’m hoping to get into a permanent position with them," said Ciaccio
Ciaccio says he's back again because he wants to have enough Christmas money for his family. "Got a lot of nephews, a niece, I have two sons, so I’ll be putting it towards them," said Ciaccio.
The UPS Communications Supervisor tells us so far, they haven't seen as big of a rush from applicants as they had in past years.
