ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Doctors and nurses are ready to start treating patients at the new multi-million dollar SwedishAmerican Regional Cancer Center.

The facility's lobby was packed on Wednesday with hospital staff, board members, and community members eager to check out the center before it opens up to patients next week. Departments that used to be spread across town are now in one location. Patients can have blood drawn, get x-rays, or a CT scan, as well as meet with doctors at this single center. Plus, there's enough room for 50 patients to get chemotherapy at once. SwedishAmerican partnered with UW Health to staff the center, a collaboration doctors say will allow patients with certain rare cancers to be treated in the Stateline.

“Often times it is difficult for any of us to travel 10 miles sometimes, much less 70 miles and work thru that so the goal is to more access to people who otherwise wouldn't have access to specialty care,” says Dr. Howard Bailey, Interim Director of the UW Carbone Cancer Center.

The community is invited to a public open house at the center Saturday October 12, 2013, from 2-4pm. The center is located at 3535 Bell School Road.
