BOONE COUNTY (WIFR) -- This year North Boone Middle School 8th Grade English teacher, Ashley Boyer, posed a challenge to her students. Write a letter to an author describing how that author’s work somehow changed the reader’s view of the world or himself/herself. Readers respond to the book they’ve read by exploring the personal relationship between themselves, the author and the book’s characters or themes.
This challenge was for the Letters About Literature national reading and writing competition. Illinois led the nation in entries with over 6,100 letters. Three North Boone 8th grade students were selected as finalists or semifinalists. Allison Baxter is selected as an Illinois Finalist and has moved on to the national competition. Marissa Chamberlin and Ashlie Grooms have been named Illinois Semi- Finalists. National judging is now underway. Judges will finalize their decision on the national prizes on April 25 and will release names approximately two weeks later; once all signed permission release forms are in hand.
