FREEPORT (WIFR) -- Voters in Freeport have a chance to change the way their city government operates. There is a question on the November ballot asking voters if they want to switch to a managerial form of government. Supporters say this would place the day-to-day operations in Freeport in the hands of a professional city manager. This person would be hired by the mayor and city council, not by voters. That group would still control things like passing ordinances, setting the city budget and strategic planning.

"Nobody is going to come and save us. We have to reinvent ourselves. It’s time to try something new. We haven’t been making any headway on the challenges our community has faced in terms of unemployment and job opportunities for our kids graduating high school," said Freeport resident, David Fonda.

This referendum has been voted down twice in the past, most recently in 2010.
