ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- Literacy groups say getting kids involved in reading before they get to kindergarten is essential.
Kids got the chance to have some fun on Saturday while working on their reading skills during the Success by 6 Family Fun Day.
There were all sorts of activities with lots of coloring, and arts and crafts.
They were all related to the books used in this year's Page Turner Reading Program; it's for kids ages three to five to get them ready for kindergarten.
"When children enter school behind, they very rarely catch up so its our goal to front load this and be as preventative as possible for our children and families," said Success by 6 Advisory Council Member Jenny Karlson. "So we're trying to catch our kids young and get our families involved in literacy and help make sure they're starting school ready to learn."
The Success by 6 Program donates over 3,000 books each month to kids in stateline schools.
