Students Brush Up on Dental Health

ROCKFORD (WIFR) – You might regularly tell your kids to go brush your teeth, but a new survey shows that might not be enough.

That’s why dozens of Rockford students pre-k to third grade at Riverdahl Elementary took a trip to the Land of Smiles today.

It’s an interactive program where the “Tooth Wizard” and “Plaque Man” put on a show to tell kids about the proper way to brush and floss.

Organizers say the characters really help kids learn about oral health.

“A lot of our boys and girls don't have the advantage of seeing a dentist regularly like they should so this inspires the children to keep up their healthy habits without being told to have to do it every night and day,” said Teresa Schneider, the principal at Riverdahl Elementary.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, more than half of Illinois third graders have had a cavity.
