Storms Pound Mount Olive, Other Illinois Sites

MOUNT OLIVE, Ill. (AP) -- Cleanup efforts are underway in the southwestern Illinois community of Mount Olive after severe storms pummeled that community, damaging at least a dozen buildings in its downtown area.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries in the 2,100-resident Macoupin County town about 50 miles northeast of St. Louis.

In nearby Staunton, high winds peeled off the roof of the local IGA grocery store.

As of 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, Ameren Illinois says some 6,600 homes and businesses across the state were without electricity. More than 800 of them were in Macoupin County.

In far southern Illinois, the Alexander County courthouse in the Ohio River town of Cairo was damaged, losing part of its roof.
