STEPHENSON COUNTY (WIFR) – The Stephenson County Soil and Water Conservation District annual tree sale is underway for 2013. Each year the District sells bare root tree, evergreen and shrub seedlings to increase efforts to provide energy conservation and/or habitat cover for wildlife. These plants are for conservation purposes only and shall not be used as ornamentals or for landscaping. Deadline to order is March 19, 2013. The deadline is earlier this year which will allow us to adjust pre-ordered quantities with the nurseries. We are hoping this eliminates the “extras” at the end of the sale.
Also new this year you will find larger trees on the order form. In the past we have gotten the impression that people are a little disappointed when they pick up their tree order; so we decided to try the larger trees. The cost is slightly higher but we are hoping you will be pleased. Trees are sold in bundle sizes of 10, 25 and 100 with prices ranging from $7.50 to $225.00 for the different species and sizes.
Evergreens available include Fraser Fir, Red Pine, White Pine, Colorado Blue Spruce, Norway Spruce, White Spruce and American Arborvitae.
Deciduous Trees include Black Cherry, Black Walnut, Bur Oak, Northern Red Oak, Pin Oak, White Oak, Swamp White Oak, Red Maple and new this year Sugar Maple.
Shrubs available include Hazelnut, Red osier Dogwood, Silky Dogwood, American Plum and new this year Highbush Cranberry.
Additional items for sale include marking flags, planting gel to give your seedlings a nutrient boost, Plantskydd Animal Repellent, Tree Mats, Tree Tubes and stakes along with Bat houses, Blue Bird houses and Wood Duck houses.
The District owns 2 tree planters that can be rented if you have large acreage to plant.
Tree Order pick-up is scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2013, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Stephenson County Fairgrounds, Freeport IL. A reminder postcard will be sent to confirm the pick-up date, time and location.
