ROCKFORD (WIFR) -- When you think of big youth and high school sports in the Rockford area, football and basketball usually come to mind, not lacrosse.
Come June, Michael Daugherty says the Staybridge suites weight room will be filled with young athletes from around the country.
"This type of event will help the hotel industry not only with revenue but with room production in the area. It helps the industry tremendously. An addition like this will really thrive the hotels in the Rockford area," said Daugherty.
The addition, Daugherty is talking about is a new national lacrosse tournament taking place this summer at Sportscore two in Loves Park. The Rock River Cup is expected to draw more 3,000 players, coaches, and fans from all corners of the U.S.
Executive Vice President, Monica Krysztopa says, "Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing sports, not just in the state of Illinois, but nationally. We felt that this would be a great way to introduce this sport to our region, and to our elementary, middle school, and high school students."
Tournament organizer nxt-sports says there are several reasons why they picked the Rockford region.
“We’re very selective in where we run our events, and I think that Rockford offers a lot in that it's easy to get to. You know, Chicago's a pretty big hub for teams that'll be flying in. And it offers a lot for families to do,” said Robin Baxter, NXTsports Director.
The Rockford Area Convention and Visitors Bureau thinks this tournament could bring an estimated $585,000 to the Rockford region.
The tournament will take place June 15th and 16th this coming summer at Sportscore two. Registration just opened, so we're not sure whether any local teams will play in the event.
