UPDATE: The Rockford Police Union plans to push forward with commercials running that criticize Mayor Larry Morrissey and his administration.
The State Board of Elections says this ad violates election law because it's intent was to influence voters. There is no fine but rules that must be followed within 30 days.
Police Union President Terry Peterson says they will form a committee that focuses on informational labor issues and will disclose expenditures. He says these ads come as the result of their contract dispute and not the election. In fact a new ad will come out after Tuesday's election.
Just to be clear this ruling is a separate issue from the one that involves Democratic Rockford Mayoral Candidate Jim Hughes.
The union argues they have nothing to do with the election, but the contractual impasse between them and the city. That's scheduled for arbitration in April.
This is a separate issue from the one that involves challenger Jim Hughes.
