STATELINE (WIFR) -- The Stateline plays host to more than 30 softball teams from around the country this week, and the tournament is a grand slam for local businesses.

Hundreds of softball players are pumped to be playing in the Stateline. The players of the Amherst Lightning drove eleven hours from New York to compete in the United States Specialty Sports Association 2013 Girl’s and Women’s Fast Pitch World Series.

“That was a long drive from New York with three softball players making up cheers the whole down here,” says Donna Crum of Buffalo New York. She and several other parents made the trip to watch their daughters play in Rockford.

Other teams drove in from Iowa, Arizona, even Wyoming for the competition and they brought with them plenty of cheerleaders. That all means big bucks for local hotels, who have to find rooms for more than a thousand people to stay during the next week. While the players are here to win, it’s the area’s economy really scoring big.

“Some of the girls have been at a go-kart track, laser tag, we've got some families out a camp ground in Belvidere enjoying the outdoors,” says Chris Sherman of Cedar Rapids, IA. His daughter plays for the Eastern Iowa Starz.

Extra visitors to local restaurants and attractions will translate into extra dollars for the Stateline economy.

These thousand people while they are here will spend in excess of $700,000, perhaps $1 million, and that’s new money that would have otherwise not been here supporting our local business and putting people to work," says RACVB President John Groh.

This is the sixth year the Stateline has hosted this tournament. Games will be played all week at both Sportscore One and the Harlem Sports Complex.

It’s not all out-of-towners in this tournament. The Belvidere Blasters, the Stateline Fury from Roscoe, and the Big Dogs Invasion from Rockford are all competing this week.
