Small Town Police Concerned About Dispatch Fees

SYCAMORE, Ill. (AP) -- Small town police departments in northeastern Illinois are expressing concern over possible increases in the fees they pay for dispatch services from DeKalb County.

With only a few police officers on staff, many municipalities rely on the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department for the service. Exceptions are the cities of Sycamore and Genoa, which staff their own dispatch centers within the sheriff's office.

That led those two cities to feel they were paying more than their fair share, compared to the municipalities piggybacking off the sheriff's office.

But municipal officials told the county board's law and justice committee they can't afford a hike.

Waterman Police Department paid nearly $17,000 last year. Under a proposal for this year, it would owe $47,000.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle reports some are considering alternatives.
