UPDATE: LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- One of the teenage girls who stole a car and got into a bad accident in Loves Park two weeks ago is in more trouble. The 13-year-old driver is now heading to court.

The teen is being charged as an adult for some of the crimes and she'll be spending her time at the Winnebago County Juvenile Detention Center. Police say she was on drugs, driving recklessly, and didn't have a driver's license. She's also accused theft and stealing a car. The passengers in the car are still recovering from their injuries but everyone is expected to live.

UPDATE: LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- There are new developments in an accident that involved two 13 and 14 year old girls who stole a car in Elgin and crashed it in Loves Park last week. It turns out one of the guys in the car is a sex offender.

19-year-old Sherman Sawtelle from Savannah was convicted of a sex offense when he was a juvenile. DeKalb Police say there is a felony warrant out for his arrest, for failing to register as a sex offender. Loves Park Police say Sawtelle is still in the hospital. It is unknown how he knew the teen girls. The Department of Human Services says the girls are still in critical condition, but are improving.

UPDATE: LOVES PARK (WIFR) -- A big twist in last night's serious crash in Loves Park; not only was one of the cars involved, reported stolen, the person who caused the crash isn't even old enough to drive. The driver and another teenaged girl are now in critical condition.
The crash happened just after 8:00 last night. Loves Park Police say the girls who are 13 and 14 years old, are fighting for their lives at Rockford Memorial Hospital. They lived at a group home in Elgin called the Larkin Center for children and teens with emotional and behavioral issues.

Police say they drove the stolen car from Elgin to Loves Park where they got gas Wednesday afternoon and drove off without paying.

Police looked for the stolen car all day, but it wasn't until last night when an officer spotted the car at the intersection of Loves Park and Windsor road. Before the officer could verify the license plate number, the girls blew through a red light, crossed the median and hit another car head on.

“Right now, it’s too early to tell why the crash happened. We look at everything that happened and hopefully that reconstruction with the Rockford Police Department is conducting for us will give us some answers,” said Department Chief Rodney Scott with the Loves Park Police.

The car that was hit was driven by 51-year-old Jeff Reisetter of Machesney Park. Police say he didn’t cause the crash, but was arrested for drinking and driving. There were also two men in the backseat of the stolen car. 19-year-old Sherman Sawtelle from Savannah and 20-year-old Kyle Arrington from Rockford. They are still in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Rockford police department is now reconstructing the accident. If the 14-year-old passenger dies from her injuries, there's a chance the 13-year-old driver could be charged with reckless homicide. We've been trying all day to contact the Larkin Center, the group home in Elgin where the girls were staying, but they have not returned our calls or emails to find out whether the girls were runaways, or how long they have been missing. The Larkin Center does receive state funding.
