Sen. Durbin Attacks Energy Drink Companies

CHICAGO (WIFR) -- Senator Dick Durbin is energized, in his fight with the makers of energy drinks. Illinois's senior senator sent a letter to the the CEO's Monster, Red Bull and Rock Star, telling those companies to stop targeting children.

In a letter co-signed by Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal. Durbin called for energy drink companies to stop sponsoring high school sporting events and advertising at places like little league games.

A 16 ounce can of Monster contains 160 milligrams. While the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that adolescents consume no more than 100 milligrams of caffeine a day.

The Food and Drug Administration is currently studying the dangers of energy drinks in teens and children and is expected to report those findings in June.
