ROCKFORD, IL – April 3, 2012 — Illinois Lottery officials announced yesterday financial results from the record breaking Mega Millions drawing Friday night. Last week the Illinois Lottery recorded total sales of $94.36 million – the largest sales week in Illinois Lottery history, shattering the previous record of $73.8 million for the week ending April 15, 1989.
Beyond the $219 million winner who bought the winning ticket at the Moto Mart in Red Bud, there were 11 players who matched five numbers and won $250,000 and one other second place winner who opted for the Megaplier feature of the game and won $1 million. Although our grand prize winner has not come forward yet, a few of the 12 second place winners have started claiming their prizes.
One of the first winners to claim their winnings come from the Rockford area who matched five numbers for a prize of $250,000. The Illinois Lottery would like to congratulate a group of eight employees who work at the Boys and Girls Club of Rockford. Derek Papich was one of the winners from the group who pooled their money together pretty much last minute for the largest jackpot in the history of the planet. He is very thankful and at the same time, lucky that he can share this experience with eight other people. “I feel very lucky to have them working here at the Boys and be a part of this organization. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer better group of people," he said.
This has been a positive experience for the group. "So far it's been amazing and although it feels very foreign and unbelievable. I am so elated I get to share this Lottery experience and go on this journey with seven people that I truly admire and respect. We are not only coworkers but we are good friends," said Papich. He already went out to buy his first new toy with part of his winnings. "Yep, I went out and bought a camera and camcorder. I want to document our incredible Lottery experience.” he adds. Papich plans on paying off some bills and making a donation to the Boys and Girls Club and the Rotary Club.
“This has been an incredible week for the Illinois Lottery and the people of our state,” said Michael Jones, Superintendent of the Illinois Lottery. “Our jackpot winner from Red Bud, a wonderful town in southern Illinois, along with thousands of other lottery winners across the state proves that if you believe it can happen…it might. Everyone who played Mega Millions not only made history by playing for the largest lottery prize in the history of the planet, but contributed to the common good in our state.”
Throughout Illinois, people flocked to more than 7,900 dedicated lottery retailers to purchase Mega Millions tickets. Lyford Rd Mobil located at 8061 East State Street in Rockford sold the winning ticket. They will receive a bonus check for $2,500.
"I hope I come down from cloud nine soon!" Papich exclaimed. In the meantime, he and the rest of his colleagues/friends are enjoying this surreal experience…an experience which will bring possibilities to their lives. This Lottery win will affect eight people's lives…how great is that?
